Diana Cheney (Peterson)

Diana Charlene Cheney Peterson 1952 ~ 2010 Diana Charlene Cheney Peterson passed away August 7, 2010. Although Diana faced cancer with courage the last years of her life, she never allowed the disease to keep her from living a life of service and love. Diana was born in Salt Lake City on May 19, 1952, to Jesse Lewis and Charlene Cheney, the oldest of two children. She graduated from Highland High School, the University of Utah, and attended a Masters program at Utah State University. She entered the teaching profession, and taught most grades at Eastwood Elementary for ten years. Her teaching skills were legendary, and Diana was visited by many former students throughout her life. Diana married Craig E. Peterson on February 14, 1979. Both Diana's parents and Craig's parents and Craig's sister accompanied them on their honeymoon. Diana's parents and Craig's parents, Ted T. and Georgia B. Peterson, remained close friends throughout their marriage, continuing to travel together with Diana, Craig, and the family. Together Diana and Craig raised three outstanding children, Jessica Georgia Peterson, Ted Charles Peterson, and Jennifer Jeanne Peterson. She encouraged her children to experience all aspects of life, to love others, to serve others, to see the world, and to obtain as much education as they can. They fulfilled her expectations in every way possible. Diana and Craig were blessed to experience much of life's challenges and happiness together, and they lived each day deeply in love. Diana supported Craig in his public service. They were able to travel throughout the world together, and share experiences from her favorite city, Hong Kong, to his, London.In the last years of her life, her comfort was in knowing that love is eternal. Diana served faithfully in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in leadership positions, including ward Relief Society President for six years, and as a caring Bishop's wife in the Westminster Student Ward. When Diana married Craig, she suggested that they move from the Monument Park Stake, but she ended up spending her life in the 9th, 11th, 17th, and 13th wards. She never regretted that decision, and enjoyed serving and helping numerous friends in that neighborhood throughout her life. iana's friends were from all neighborhoods and from all walks of life. She never forgot birthdays and never forgot names. When anyone was ill or in need of special attention, she would be the first there with food, a card, and love. When a neighbor's child was hit by a car, she was at the hospital before the ambulance. Because of Diana, her family didn't need a telephone directory. Diana's love of formal entertaining was legendary. Diana was a talented artist and seamstress. She was a brilliant negotiator. Diana quietly supported many community endeavors and attended many community events. She was always compassionate, gracious, and elegant. Diana is survived by her husband, Craig; their children, Jessica, Ted, and Jennifer; her parents, Lew and Charlene Cheney; her brother, J.C. Cheney, his wife, Jodi, and their eight children and three grandchildren; her husband's parents, Ted and Georgia Peterson; and her sister in law, Elizabeth Peterson, and her two children. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her aunt, Jeanne Cheney. She has a special place in her heart for all of her family.
