Dean Workman

Dean E. Workman 1951 ~ 2010 A heart gave out in a man who had a heart as big as the ocean. At 58 years old, Dean Workman died, February 26, 2010 of a sudden heart attack. The world was blessed with the birth of Dean Elwood Workman on November, 9, 1951. He was born to Elwood Workman and Geneal Halliday Workman in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Toby Lafferty in 1981. They were later divorced but remained friends and co- taught at the University of Utah for many years. Dean later found his loving soul mate and married Marty Shannon on March 6, 1999. He was the most loving, fun, inspiring and supportive husband there could be. He became the father to Marty's daughter, Sarah, and shared the same loving qualities of support and inspiration for her. Dean was the kind of friend and co-worker who could be counted on to share his enthusiasm, vast knowledge, support, and infectious fun loving spirit. He had a deep commitment to doing what was right for people. His love and friendship will be missed by all those who were honored to know him. After more than 30 years of service as a Licensed Professional Counselor for Valley Mental Health, he continued to maintain a passion for his work and a contagious belief that every person and youth had the ability to make positive change. He gave counsel and hope to thousands of families and children through his work. He was a multi-talented, creative man with endless interests. He could remodel his houses, create cabinets and mantles with his carpentry skills, fix his vehicles, and program computers. In addition, he had interests in a vast range of music and books, languages, cars, skiing, hiking, and travel. He loved research in his field and was especial known for his understanding of how trauma and abuse affect adopted children. He sought out research in other fields and had a remarkable ability to remember the names and works of people who conduct research, write or compose. He is preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, and sister-in-law. He is survived by his wife and daughter, sister Kay (Gary) Despain, sister-in-law Patty (Michael) Clark, brother-in-law Charles Shannon, six nephews, four nieces, their spouses and their beautiful children as well as the thousands of people who were touched by Dean's gentle inspiration.
