Former Councilman dies

 EDWARD PARKER DIES
OF A HEART ATTACK
Edward Parker, a charter member of the Salt Lake City Council and a former principal of several area high schools died Thursday of a heart attack. He was 63.
Mr. Parker was first elected following the city’s change of government.
Mr. Parker was an administrator in the Salt Lake City School District for more than 30 years. He taught at Bryant Junior High, South and West High schools and was principal at Lincoln Junior High, West High and Highland High.
Since 1974 he was supervisor of administrative services in the superintendent’s office.
He served as director of federal and state programs for the Salt Lake City school district. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Utah, Montana State University and Brigham Young’s Continuing Education program in Salt Lake City.
Mr. Parker was born November 10, 1922 to Nellie Oliver and George P. Parker in Provo. He married Barbara Jean Gunn on May 1, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah in 1947 and a Master’s Degree of Educational Administration from the University of California at Berkeley in 1949. He earned his doctorate in Education Administration from Harvard University in 1959. He also had post-doctoral work at UCLA, the University of San Francisco and Trinity University.
He was a former board member of the Kiwanis Club and the Salt Lake area United Fund, President of the Utah Association of School Administrators and he was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
He served as an officer in the US Navy during WWII in the South Pacific.
He is survived by his wife in Salt Lake, one son E. William; and 5 daughters; Laurel, Diane, Kathleen, Marilyn and Allison; 2 brothers, a sister and 23 grandchildren.
Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Died very young - 63. I thought he was old when we were in school and he would have only been 48!! Just goes to show the perspective of a 17/18 year old!

Oh! I couldn’t see the DOD but he still seemed “old” to me when we were back in school and he would have only been 48!

He was actually 63 when he died. And it was very young! The only other edit I would make is that he was the Principal and not a teacher at Highland. "Big Ed" loomed large for me both at school and at home! :)
