In sixth grade at Highland Park Elementary we had dance every Friday. Joel was always my dance partner. He was always so sweet and we had a lot of laughs together. I felt so bad when he passed away at such a very young age.

He was a very sweet boy!  I think you and I were able to dance with he a Bill Burgess because we were the tall girls in the class.  Remember when they would line us up according to height?  Didn’t he pass away from choking on the  operating table while going in to have him appendix taken out?  I just remember being so shocked!  Bless his heart.  He was special and so sweet!

I was going to post that too about being paired with either Joel or Bill Burgess because I was one of the “tall” girls! (Don’t consider myself tall at 5’5” now!). I reconnected with Joel in late Jr, High or early High School. He was such a nice guy. Later in 1972, I saw a girl I knew who I know lived in Bountiful coming out of a local ward house funeral procession. When I saw her next I asked what she was doing in the neighborhood and she said “attending a cousin’s funeral”.  It was Joel. He actually had prostate cancer (very young for that) and while being moved from a gurney to an imaging table for an X-ray he aspirated and died. She said he had lost a lot of weight, etc. He was very ill. I believe she and Joel were both cousins of Dave Egan.

I knew Joel very well. His cousin, Greg Stevens (also, a Highland graduate) lived in my ward. I met Joel, through Greg, and we became fast friends. I visited Joel when he was in the hospital, just before he died. He did have cancer and died on April 5, 1972. It was devastating to his parents, since he was their only son. He was a really great guy and lots of fun to be with. He was a gentle giant.

I have been searching for an obituary on Joel.  Does anyone know if his parents did one?

I only see an obit for his father, Joseph who died 4/30/2001. His mother, LaRue, died 2/2/1986. I am still in touch with his cousin on FB and I will check with her for Joel's obit.
