In Memory

Larry Palmer (Teacher)

Larry Palmer (Teacher)

Lawrence Lee Palmer 1923 ~ 2007 A most kind and gentle-hearted man has left us. No one was more determined and stoic than Lawrence Lee Palmer. He was born on March 5, 1923 to Minnie Jane and Lawrence Palmer. After enduring illness and infection for many years, he finally found peace on December 20, 2007. From humble beginnings, Larry worked and studied hard to become an educator. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the U. of U. and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. His career spanned 35 years starting as a coach at Grand County High School in Moab. There he led the football team to their first ever state tournament. He returned to Salt Lake to teach and coach at Roosevelt Jr. High, then at South High. When Highland High opened in 1956, he became their football coach. He was always proud of his teams and led Highland to a State Championship in 1959. Larry then moved on to administration at Highland, East High and Northwest Middle School. Larry treasured his friends. He had strong and loyal ties to so many great men. As his health deteriorated, they were patient and understanding. Even on the morning of his last hospitalization, he went out for donuts with "the boys." Most dear to Lawrence's heart was his wife. He married Marion Spratt on August 18, 1947 at the Garden Park Ward in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Their 60 years together were quite an adventure. They stood strong through difficult times and celebrated together during their many happy experiences, especially building their much loved cabin. Lawrence and Marion have two children and their spouses: Brent and Cindy Palmer and Gayle and Mark Linford. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored their grandpa: Justin and Kristen Palmer (Alex, James and Ava), Ashley and Kirk Rasmussen (Matthew, Palmer and Will), Cameron and Allison Palmer (Mason), Bryan and Jodi Palmer (Jack), Jessica Linford, Claire and Todd Argyle, and two great grands on the way. He also esteemed his extended family, including his sister-in-law, Gertie Spratt. Larry was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation and served as secretary for 15 years. He loved rubbing shoulders with people who shared his interest in sports. We know he would love any contributions you might make to the Sports Hall of Fame Foundation in his name. After posting this obituary, I began trying to remember how many times I met with Dr. Palmer in his office.  Don't tell my kids or grandkids.  They think I was an angel in high school.  Weren't we all? angel

I remember standing in the halls after classes had started just talking with friends and low-and-behold, Mr. Palmer (at that time he hadn't earned his advanced degrees), came leaping down the halls, just to remind everyone that classes had started, hence his nickname, "Leapen Larry."  Many found memories.  Just incase Gayle reads  these comments, I just want to say 'HI' Gayle.  It has been a long long time surprise. Hope all is well for you and your family.

I had the great good fortune to have Larry as my uncle -- that uncle that was almost a father, filled with love of life, passion for people, always ready withh a kind word, encouragement to try something new, and willing to do anything for his family.  His passage was filled with dignity and courage just as his life was, and he left a deep and meaningfully positive impression on the lives of so many.   May his memory be a blessing.

Here is a portrait my son Sam painted a few weeks before his death.   I captures his essence well, I think.

Your son is very talented!   I never had any dealings with Mr. Palmer personally but I do recall the nickname “Leapin’ Larry”!  He seemed to have lived quite a life and positively touched the lives of many. Sorry for your loss, Randy.

In respect, truly!  I think those of us who gave Leapin’ Larry a hard time, and kept him alive this long might be attributed to the rebels trying to drive away from class, in the North Lot, to get to Luigi’s and running after those of us on foot who ran to Sugar House Park...That poor guy!  It makes me think if we had just stopped and talked to him and taken our consequences, we would have come to know a beautiful man.  Stupid teenagers.....Reflecting on this makes me realize how much he cared for us. We love you, Leapin’ Larry.  Everyone knew you because of that drive to keep us in school.  I am so sorry for your loss, Randy! (I heard from Mark before his death that you were a genius!). That painting is beautiful!  You can see his spirit in his eyes......Awwww.  Forgive me, Mr Palmer,,,,,you were a Rock Star!
